LAWRENCE YANCEY Obituary

SYLVANIA, GEORGIA

BEVERLY LAWRENCE YANCEY

Beverly Lawrence Yancey, age 77, of Sylvania, died peacefully early Thursday morning, November 2, 2023, due to complications from a stroke eight months earlier. His wife of 45 years, Harriet Hagan Yancey, was at his bedside. Throughout his ordeal, he maintained a positive disposition and a grateful heart.

Lawrence was born in Dekalb County, GA, on February 18, 1946, to Beverly Marshall and Mary Brooks Yancey. He graduated from Druid Hills High School in 1964 and studied Business    Administration at Dekalb College. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1967 and served with the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines (known as the “Walking Dead”) at Khe Sanh, South Vietnam. Among his awards was the Purple Heart Medal for injuries sustained in the conflict.

After his recovery, he went into residential concrete sales in the Atlanta area for Williams Brothers Concrete Company (later to become Blue Circle and then Lafarge). He was very successful at his job in sales, making the company’s Million Dollar Club for three consecutive years and was promoted to residential sales manager. He had a natural talent for obtaining the best from his sales force and was named Manager of the Year in 1986. He loved his job and, even after retiring from the company and moving with his wife to her hometown, he commuted to Atlanta for several years to work part-time as a contractor for the company.

Lawrence was an accomplished hunter and angler. He was fortunate to have the opportunity to travel the western hemisphere and brought home quite a number of trophies. He was a member of the Sylvania First United Methodist Church, Sylvania Lions Club, and VFW Post 7116.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother, Marshall Lewis Yancey.

In addition to his wife, Lawrence is survived by his twin sister Carole Yancey Pruitt (husband George) of Cleveland, GA; younger sister, Deborah Yancey of Lafayette, GA; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Edward & Jean Krulic Hagan of Sylvania, GA; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

The family will receive visitors on Sunday evening, November 5, 2023, from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Thompson-Strickland-Waters Funeral Home in Sylvania, GA. The funeral service will be held on Monday, November 6, 2023, at 1:00 P.M. at First United Methodist Church in Sylvania, GA, with the Rev. Dorsia Atkinson officiating. Interment will follow at Screven County Memorial Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Sam Pruitt, Scott Pruitt, Kevin Hagan, Craig Martinson, Hagan Martinson, and John Martinson.

Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church (for missions) at P.O. Box 258, Sylvania, GA, 30467 or Ogeechee Area Hospice at P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, GA, 30459 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Harriet would like to express her gratitude to his longtime friends who continued to check on him, to his personal caregivers (Sherri Ferguson and Tanya Yarbrough), to the Ogeechee Area Hospice staff, and to his Pop’s Kitchen and Donna’s Bakery employee friends who always made him feel special at lunchtime.
