Reverend Roan Louis Powell

Reverend Roan Louis Powell, 86, of Sylvania, Georgia, entered into eternal rest on October 28, 2025 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 7, 1939, in Twin City, Georgia, to the late Paul Lester Powell and Ruby Oglesby Powell.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and servant of God, Reverend Powell married the love of his life, Mary Alice Adams, on March 9, 1957. Together they shared a blessed union filled with love, laughter, and faith for more than 68 years.

Before beginning his ministry, Reverend Powell honorably served his country in the United States Air Force for four years. His sense of duty, integrity, and quiet strength shaped both his service to his nation and his lifelong dedication to the Lord.

Answering God’s call to ministry, Reverend Powell faithfully served for more than 52 years, pastoring numerous churches throughout Georgia and South Carolina. He was known for his compassionate spirit, humble leadership, and his ability to make everyone feel the love of Christ through his words and actions. His final pastorate was at Salem Baptist Church in Cochran, Georgia, where he often said, “God saved the best for last.”

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Paul L. Powell, Jr.

Reverend Powell is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Alice Powell; his children, Nickey T. Powell of Augusta, SC, Dean H. Powell of Greenwood, SC, Gene G. Powell of Myrtle Beach, SC, Sissy Powell Winters (Jerry) of Sylvania, GA, and Tammie Powell Williams (Doug) of Reidsville, GA; his cherished grandchildren, Brittany Powell Grosskopf, Christian Powell (Sarah), Victoria Winters Waits (Trey), Nicole Winters Fulmer (Cole), Logan Channing Lewis, Merri Clair Lewis, Avery Williams Lee (Joseph), and Brinley Williams; and several great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at First Baptist Church Sylvania. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Interment will follow the service in Screven County Memorial Cemetery.
