Marie Evans Scott, age 85, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, September 28, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on January 7, 1940, in Screven County, Georgia, to the late Johnny James and Elise (Robbins) Evans. A proud native of Screven County, Marie graduated from Screven County High School in 1958 at the age of 18. She continued her education at Shorter University in Rome, GA, and Reinhardt University in Waleska, GA, where she pursued her passion for early childhood education.
Marie dedicated much of her life to nurturing and guiding young minds. She spent many years teaching Sunday school to first graders at First United Methodist Church of Sylvania, GA, where her gentle spirit and patient heart left a lasting impression on generations of children. She also faithfully served in the church’s children’s program, devoting countless hours to helping little ones learn about faith, kindness, and community. Known for her creativity, Marie lovingly made or altered many of the Christmas and Easter costumes for the children’s seasonal programs, a tradition that brought joy to both the children and the congregation. She attended services at the First United Methodist of Sylvania with her family for many years and also attended many services at the First Christian Church of Sylvania. She had many close friends at both churches.
While her service to the church was an important part of her life, Marie’s greatest joy came from her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and great-grandmother, whose love knew no bounds. Her home was always open and welcoming,a place filled with laughter, warmth, and the comforting smell of her cooking. Marie had a gift for making each member of her family feel special, whether through a kind word, a thoughtful gesture, or her unwavering support. Family gatherings and holiday traditions were especially dear to her, and she worked tirelessly to make those moments memorable for everyone. All of her grandchildren, their friends and many of the children at the church and in the community lovingly referred to her as “Mamarie”.
Marie lived a life of service, not only through her church and family but also through her work. For many years she served as a beloved mail carrier in the community, faithfully delivering mail to friends and neighbors around town. She loved her route and the people on it, always taking time to share a smile, a kind word, or a moment of conversation. Her dedication to her work and genuine care for others made her more than a mail carrier – she was a familiar and trusted friend to so many in Sylvania.
Even beyond her route, Marie was known for her thoughtfulness in keeping in touch. She rarely missed an occasion to send a birthday card, a sympathy card, a graduation card or handwritten letter. To many, she could have been affectionately called “the card lady”, as her notes of love and encouragement brightened mailboxes and hearts alike. Marie is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Lee Ann Scott (Luther Polk) and Tracey Scott-Smith (Woody Smith) of Sylvania, GA and Tamara Scott Davis (Chris Davis) of Bluffton, SC; grandchildren, Bailey Davis Rummler (Noah Rummler) of Atlanta, GA, CT Davis (Briana Rubinich Davis) of Charlotte, NC, Logan Smith (Jillian Lindsey Smith) and Kinslee Polk of Sylvania, GA and her beloved great-grandchildren, Erika Rummler and Albert Rummler (of Atlanta, GA), Kinsley Lane and Blakely Smith of Sylvania, GA. She also leaves behind sisters, Emily McCall of Alabama and Virgina Ozmore Heath of Texas. She leaves behind many other friends, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnny James and Elise Evans, her beloved husband of over 50 years, Harold Lee Scott, her infant son, Joseph Watson Scott, her in laws, Harold and Katherine Scott, brothers, James Evans, Thomas Evans and Ted Evans and sister, Martha Ann Austin.
