Larry Wyman Gordon Sr was born on March 12, 1940, in Ludowici, GA, to Raymond Solomon Gordon Sr. and Marjorie Campbell Gordon. He died on August 13, 2025, under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice, surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He grew up mainly in Jesup, Ga, with his parents and his brothers, that he fought with but adored. He attended Georgia Southern College, where he received a degree in Art Education. He later received a master's degree as well as an administrative degree. He taught art in several school systems for more than 30 years. He was later an administrator at Screven County Elementary School, and he owned several businesses in Screven County, GA.
Larry was a member of First Baptist Church, Sylvania, Ga, where he served as a deacon and taught Sunday School for many years. Larry was married to the love of his life, Linda Cain Gordon, for 62 years. She is left to cherish his memory along with their daughter, Lorri Gordon Thompson, and her husband, Johnny Thompson, whom he loved like a son, and their son, Larry Wyman Gordon, Jr., who was his best friend.
Larry’s greatest joy was found in his grandchildren: Jacob Gordon Thompson and his wife Madison; Jared Lanier Thompson, who gave him the name “Gordy” that stuck with him for the rest of his life, and his wife Summer; his “namesake” granddaughter Laramy Thompson Guest and her husband Preston; Rhett Earnhardt Thompson and his wife Caitlyn; Elle Reese Gordon; Ava Grayce Gordon; and Isla Wren Gordon. His
great-grandchildren: Hamilton Cain Thompson, Morgan Brian Thompson, and Jamerson Edward Blanton Thompson (JEB). On the day he died, “Gordy” found out that his yet unborn great-grandchild will be a girl.
Gordy loved the Lord and his family unconditionally and with all his heart. He is also survived by his brother, Melvin N. Gordon and his wife, Joan, and his sister-in-law, Carol Cain McGregor. His nephews, Tony Gordon and Matt McGregor, and his nieces, Joy Gordon Hawks, Jennifer Gordon Muller, April Gordon Solomon, Lindsay Gordon Ewing, and Amy McGregor Farley.
He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Lionel Cain Gordon, his brother, Raymond Solomon Gordon, Jr., his sister-in-law, Eloise Wingate Gordon, and his brother-in-law, M Dixon McGregor.
Larry was always artistic; he had a great love for the outdoors and an appreciation for all of nature and animals, which he passed on to his children and grandchildren. In his lifetime, he was never without a hunting dog. He could make almost any animal or bird sound that you could think of. He loved to sing and whistle and could do both at an early age. He had one distinctive whistle, and his children and grandchildren knew to come running whenever they heard it. He was a natural teacher who loved to learn as well. He enjoyed reading and telling stories, real or made up. He always made the time to spend with his children and grandchildren and would go on adventures they came up with. He was also the ultimate optimist, and if you asked him, he would say, “I’m doing good!” even when he was in the worst pain of his life.
Larry was a friend and helper to many; he loved people and he looked for the best in everyone. His time on this earth was an example of kindness, compassion, and patience, and he never lost his wonderful sense of humor.
His pallbearers will be his son-in-law, Johnny G. Thompson; his grandsons, Jake Thompson, Jared Thompson and Rhett Thompson; his grandson-in-law, Preston Guest and his nephews, Tony Gordon and Matt McGregor who will carry him with love to his final resting place at Bethel Brick Church, where he and his wife Linda were married, on Wade Plantation in Screven County GA that he loved and hunted on for all his married life.
